The Pokémon SV3 Ruler of the Black Flame Japanese Booster Box puts one Pokémon firmly in the spotlight: Charizard.

Released in Japan on July 28, 2023, Ruler of the Black Flame is the third main Scarlet & Violet expansion and introduces a particularly striking version of Charizard ex—a Dark-type Tera Pokémon ex. The Japanese name of the expansion is 黒炎の支配者 (Kurohonō no Shihai-sha).

This isn’t simply another Charizard set, though. SV3 combines the Dark Tera Charizard theme with other Terastallized Pokémon, competitive cards, Illustration Rares and a substantial secret-card selection.

For collectors, it is an early Japanese Scarlet & Violet release with a very clear identity. For players, it introduced cards that became relevant to the competitive environment. And for sealed collectors, the Charizard-centered artwork makes the Japanese booster display immediately recognizable.

🔥 Dark Tera Charizard Takes Center Stage

The defining feature of Ruler of the Black Flame is its Charizard ex.

Instead of appearing as a traditional Fire-type Pokémon, this version of Charizard uses the Dark Tera mechanic. Its appearance and typing give the card a very different character from many previous Charizard releases.

The set includes several collectible versions of Charizard ex, including:

  • Charizard ex 066/108

  • Charizard ex 125/108

  • Charizard ex 134/108 — SAR

  • Charizard ex 139/108 — UR

The multiple high-rarity Charizard cards are one of the biggest reasons collectors continue to look for sealed SV3 boxes.

⚫ What Makes the Tera Charizard Different?

Terastallization was one of the major mechanics introduced with Scarlet & Violet, and SV3 gives the mechanic a particularly memorable showcase.

The Dark Tera Charizard ex is visually and mechanically different from the familiar Fire-type Charizard collectors are used to seeing.

Its Infernal Reign Ability is also notable from a gameplay perspective, allowing the player to accelerate Basic Fire Energy from the deck when the Pokémon is played into the active position.

That combination of recognizable Pokémon, unusual Tera typing and competitive relevance helped make this one of the standout Charizard products of the Scarlet & Violet generation.

🦅 Pidgeot ex Adds Another Competitive Chase

Charizard isn’t the only Pokémon that gives SV3 value from a gameplay perspective.

Pidgeot ex is another important card from the expansion, with its own Special Art Rare version.

The card became particularly interesting to players because of its Quick Search Ability, which allows the player to search the deck for a card once during each turn.

That gives Pidgeot ex a role beyond simply being a collectible Pokémon. It is one of the cards that makes Ruler of the Black Flame relevant to both competitive players and collectors.

🐲 More Tera Pokémon to Discover

SV3 continues experimenting with Pokémon appearing in Tera forms that differ from their normal typing.

Among the notable Pokémon ex in the set are:

  • Charizard ex

  • Tyranitar ex

  • Pidgeot ex

  • Glimmora ex

  • Absol ex

  • Toxtricity ex

  • Vespiquen ex

  • Revavroom ex

The expansion therefore isn’t simply a one-card Charizard chase. There is a broader selection of Pokémon ex and Terastallized Pokémon throughout the release.

🎨 Illustration Rare Hunting

The higher-rarity portion of SV3 adds another reason to open the product.

The Japanese release contains 108 cards in the main set plus 33 secret cards, giving 141 collectible cards in total. The secret portion includes AR, SR, SAR and UR cards.

That means collectors aren’t restricted to hunting Charizard ex. The set also contains alternate artwork and premium versions of other Pokémon and Trainers.

For collectors who enjoy completing a Japanese set by rarity, SV3 provides a good mix of conventional Pokémon ex cards and more elaborate full-art illustrations.

🇯🇵 Original Japanese SV3 Release

This listing is for the Japanese version of Ruler of the Black Flame.

The official Japanese Pokémon Card Game release date was July 28, 2023, and each Japanese booster pack contains 5 randomly inserted cards. The original Japanese booster box contains 30 packs.

SV3 is also closely connected to the international Scarlet & Violet—Obsidian Flames expansion. For collectors specifically seeking the original Japanese product, however, this is the SV3 Japanese display, with Japanese cards and Japanese packaging.
