Pokémon Ancient Roar SV4K Japanese Booster Box | Roaring Moon ex
Price range: 71 $ through 1 ,120 $
Step into the ancient side of the Pokémon Scarlet & Violet timeline with the SV4K Ancient Roar Japanese Booster Box.
Released in Japan on October 27, 2023, Ancient Roar is one half of the paired Japanese release that introduced the fourth major Scarlet & Violet expansion. Its companion, Future Flash (SV4M), explores the futuristic Paradox Pokémon, while Ancient Roar takes the opposite approach with Pokémon representing an ancient version of the Pokémon world.
The set’s biggest attraction is undoubtedly Roaring Moon ex, the powerful Ancient Paradox Pokémon that receives multiple rarity treatments within SV4K. But there is considerably more to discover, including Sandy Shocks ex, Golisopod ex, Armarouge ex, Tsareena ex and several beautifully illustrated Pokémon and Trainer cards.
For collectors building a Japanese Scarlet & Violet collection, Ancient Roar is an important release because it captures the point where the Ancient and Future Paradox Pokémon became a major part of the TCG.
🦖 Roaring Moon ex — The Star of Ancient Roar
If there is one card that defines SV4K, it is Roaring Moon ex.
Roaring Moon is an Ancient Paradox Pokémon associated with the Scarlet version of the Pokémon games, and Ancient Roar gives the Pokémon an unusually large presence in the set.
It appears in four different Japanese printings:
-
054/066 — Regular Roaring Moon ex
-
084/066 — Super Rare
-
090/066 — Special Art Rare
-
093/066 — Ultra Rare
That makes Roaring Moon the only Pokémon in this expansion to receive four separate rarity treatments.
The 090/066 SAR is the major artwork chase, while the gold 093/066 version gives collectors another premium interpretation of the same Pokémon.
Ancient Pokémon From a Different Timeline
Ancient Roar is built around the Ancient Paradox Pokémon concept.
These Pokémon are mysterious counterparts to familiar species, presented as creatures originating from a distant prehistoric timeline.
The set includes:
-
Roaring Moon
-
Sandy Shocks
-
Scream Tail
-
Slither Wing
-
Brute Bonnet
-
Great Tusk
The Ancient mechanic also gives these cards their own gameplay identity, with Ancient Pokémon and associated Trainer cards designed to work together.
This makes SV4K particularly appealing to collectors who enjoy the lore behind the Scarlet & Violet generation rather than simply collecting individual chase cards.
🎨 Beyond Roaring Moon: Illustration Rare Cards
Ancient Roar has a surprisingly varied artwork selection.
The Japanese release contains 66 cards in its base set, followed by 29 higher-rarity cards, bringing the complete numbered checklist to 95 cards.
The Art Rare section includes Pokémon such as:
-
Jigglypuff
-
Morpeko
-
Garbodor
-
Sandy Shocks
-
Slither Wing
-
Scream Tail
-
Golisopod
-
Dudunsparce
-
Cofagrigus
-
Crustle
-
Whismur
These cards give the expansion a much more relaxed side compared with the aggressive Ancient Pokémon featured in its headline cards.
🐛 Golisopod ex
Another standout from the set is Golisopod ex.
The Pokémon appears in the regular set and also receives premium artwork, including Golisopod ex 088/066 SAR. Current Japanese-card marketplace listings continue to identify this card as one of the notable higher-rarity pulls from SV4K.
This is one of the reasons Ancient Roar works well as a collector set: there are several worthwhile chase cards rather than everything depending on Roaring Moon.
⚡ Sandy Shocks ex
Sandy Shocks ex brings another Ancient Paradox Pokémon into the expansion.
Its higher-rarity versions include:
083/066 — Super Rare
and
089/066 — Special Art Rare.
The SAR gives Sandy Shocks a much more elaborate illustration and is another premium card collectors can hunt for when opening Ancient Roar.
🐉 Other Pokémon ex in the Set
Ancient Roar’s base set includes several Pokémon ex beyond its headline card.
Among them are:
-
Armarouge ex
-
Tsareena ex
-
Golisopod ex
-
Cofagrigus ex
-
Sandy Shocks ex
-
Roaring Moon ex
This gives the 66-card base set a broad mixture of Pokémon types and play styles.
🌋 Trainer Cards & Premium Pulls
Ancient Roar also includes premium Trainer cards.
Some of the higher-rarity cards include:
-
Professor Sada’s Vitality
-
Mela
-
Norman
Mela receives a Special Art Rare, while Professor Sada’s Vitality and other Trainer cards receive higher-rarity versions within the secret portion.
There are also gold Ultra Rare cards, including Ancient Booster Energy Capsule, giving collectors additional targets beyond Pokémon.
🇯🇵 Original Japanese SV4K Release
This product is the original Japanese SV4K Ancient Roar expansion.
Japan released Ancient Roar and Future Flash together on October 27, 2023. Internationally, cards from both Japanese sets were combined into the English Scarlet & Violet—Paradox Rift expansion.
That means the Japanese SV4K box is not simply an English Paradox Rift box translated into Japanese. It is the original Japanese product from which part of the international expansion was assembled.
For collectors specifically building a Japanese Pokémon sealed collection, that distinction matters.
📦 Japanese Booster Box Configuration
Ancient Roar uses the standard Japanese booster-box configuration.
Each sealed display contains:
30 booster packs
5 cards per pack
150 cards per box
The Japanese release MSRP was ¥180 per pack, equivalent to ¥5,400 for a 30-pack box at release.
Because this is a randomized sealed product, Roaring Moon ex SAR, Roaring Moon ex UR or any other particular card is not guaranteed in an individual box.

🕰️ The Ancient Half of the Paradox Pair
Ancient Roar becomes even more interesting when viewed alongside SV4M Future Flash.
The two sets were deliberately released together:
Ancient Roar → Ancient Paradox Pokémon
Future Flash → Future Paradox Pokémon
Roaring Moon ex represents the Ancient side, while Iron Valiant ex represents the Future side. Together, the two expansions form the Japanese foundation for the international Paradox Rift release.
For someone collecting sealed Japanese Scarlet & Violet products chronologically, owning both SV4K and SV4M gives you the complete Japanese pairing from this stage of the series.
Why Collect SV4K Ancient Roar?
Ancient Roar has a very clear identity.
It is the Japanese expansion that introduced a major wave of Ancient Paradox Pokémon, while giving Roaring Moon ex four different collectible versions.
The set also offers a strong selection of Illustration Rare cards, premium Pokémon ex, Trainer artwork and gold cards. That makes it suitable for collectors who want something more interesting than a box built around a single headline Pokémon.
For sealed collectors, its place alongside Future Flash also gives the product additional significance within the Scarlet & Violet release timeline.
